On the 26th September 2013 at the National Assembly for Wales Gorwel held a meeting entitled: Lingua franca: what’s the future of foreign language education in Wales? At the heart of this meeting was a presentation given by Claire Parry, CILT Cymru. The talk was particularly suitable, as it was also the European Day of Languages. Claire’s talk was followed by a discussion on both the value and future of foreign language provision in Wales. This gave those who had benefitted from learning a foreign language the opportunity to discuss their own positive experiences. One of the central themes of the meeting became the repeated fact that Wales is lagging behind the other nations in the UK with respect to foreign language provision in schools and this was putting Wales at a cultural and social disadvantage.
