Since 1999 Wales has been becoming more distinct from England and the rest of the UK in a whole host of areas. People may find it surprising therefore that there has been no single text to consult to understand how Government and Politics operates in Wales. There are plenty of textbooks that cover Scottish, Northern Irish and even the politics of London but until now never one on Wales.  This means that before now you would have had to try and piece together for themselves how Wales was governed. This new textbook, however, is written to explain how it and wider Welsh politics works across some 244 pages.

This knowledge gap has all changed now thanks to three authors. The authors in question, of the The Government and Politics of Wales are: Professor Russell Deacon, Alison Denton and Rob Southall. The book is the result of years of research and the gathering information from many different sources, interviews and other professional input from: the Welsh Assembly, Westminster, Welsh and UK government officials and politicians. This means in one book for the first time, you can view the evolution of the distinctive Welsh political system from the time of Henry VIII right upto to the present.  The book also helps you understand how Welsh government and politics operates, its pros and cons and how it interacts with the the rest of the UK’s political systems. In addition there is also a 5000 words, 15 pages, glossary of key terms connected with the Welsh Assembly which goes from an ‘Act of Wales’ to ‘Yes Minister’ style of government.

The book is aimed students studying both GCE, undergraduate welsh politics and those who just want to know more about Government and Politics in Wales. As an indication of what is contained within the book the chapter headings are:

Chapter 1 – The evolution of Welsh devolution

Chapter 2 – Welsh politics, ideology and political parties

Chapter 3 – Wales in Westminster and Europe

Chapter 4 – The Welsh Government – The Core Executive
